According to a press release from the company, the burgers will be made with certified organic meat sourced from Germany and Austria. The choice to release in Germany seems calculated, too: Grub Street reports that Germany has the world’s second largest market for organic food after the US—even though it’s only got a quarter of our population. The price of the burger has not yet been announced, but we highly doubt this one’s going on the Dollar Menu. Mostly because McDonald’s has a big influence over the actions of other chains and suppliers. Eater speculates that if the chain were to release such a burger in the states, the face of American beef farming might finally start to change for the better (currently, just 3% of the beef in this country is raised organically). Plus, McDonald’s has a history of testing new strategies abroad and then bringing them home to the states (see: all-day breakfast and Create Your Taste burgers). Sadly, we don’t know if or when this might happen. So far the company has been tight-lipped about plans for organic burgers in the US. But hey, a clean eater can dream…
