Online dating site Zoosk surveyed more than 2,000 singles on the subject and found that 69% of men and woman have played the role for a friend before. And in terms of what makes a good wingman or woman, 46% said trustworthiness, 30% said being social and 63% said they don’t bail after an introduction. Simply put, a wingman or woman is a pal who’s got your dating back, says Laurie Davis, author of Love @ First Click: The Ultimate Guide to Online Dating and founder of eFlirt Expert. “It doesn’t matter if he or she is also single or in a relationship—it’s someone who will head out with you, encourage your inner flirt to come out, talk you up to potential matches, and help facilitate ideal social circumstances for meeting others.”  In addition to Zoosk’s list, Davis suggests a good “wing” shine the light on you and put your heart first. “When they know some of the qualities that you’re looking for in a partner, the night will be more meaningful—and productive,” she says. While singles did not rank humor as a top quality—only 10% want their wingman to be funny—it is a great way to break the ice, says Davis. “It’s great when there is someone you can laugh with! You’ll have so much more fun during your night out if you can giggle over weird pickup lines together.” How can you tell if he or she, or even you, are a good wing? They won’t keep you too preoccupied, won’t tell inside jokes—“Wings want to make everyone feel comfortable”—won’t leave until you’ve given them the OK and definitely won’t steal a potential date. “Remember that you’re there to support your pal, so don’t undermine her,” says Davis.
