The research: Scientists tested 73 different cosmetics including skin creams, lipsticks, and lip balms. They found measureable levels of mercury in 44% of creams tested, along with chromium and nickel in 50% and 43% of lipsticks, respectively.  What it means: Although the study examined Indian cosmetics, many were brands that you see in your favorite department and drugstores. Previous research in the U.S. confirms the presence of heavy metals including lead, aluminum, mercury, and chromium in makeup, says Margie Kelly, of the Breast Cancer Fund and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. “Lipstick is especially alarming because you could ingest it and there’s no safe level of exposure to metals like lead. Plus, it’s something you may apply multiple times per day over many decades, so the metals can buildup in your body.” The bottom line: Currently, there aren’t any laws requiring manufacturers to label what their cosmetics contain, “so the burden is completely on consumers,” Kelly adds. Fortunately, there are several tools you can use to identify brands that are toxin-free. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, which includes information about more than 73,000 products including sunscreen, makeup, skin care, hair products, fragrance, toothpaste, and more.
