Study Finds Sunscreen Alone Can T Protect Against Melanoma Prevention

The research: Researchers from The University of Manchester’s Cancer Research UK Institute and the Institute of Cancer Research (also located in the UK) studied the effect of UV light on mice with an abnormal BRAF gene, known to increase the risk of melanoma. They found that on unprotected skin, the UV light damaged the DNA pigment cells, which increases melanoma risk. But they also found that even though applying sunscreen to the mice before exposing them to the UV light reduced the damage, it failed to completely block out rays, merely slowing the development of the melanoma rather than preventing it entirely....

The 6 Times You Re Most Likely To Snack And How To Stop It

Danger Time: Special occasions The key here is to define special, says Gans. “Figure out what’s very special and what’s not as special, and tell yourself you will only snack on truly special occasions,” she says. For example, if your office gets a cake for everyone’s birthday, then office birthdays probably aren’t that special since they happen so frequently. Need some help coming up with your definition? “If you find that something is happening more than once a month, then you should pay extra attention because it may not be as special as you think,” says Gans....

The compound with links to cancer— 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI— is a result of the type of artificial caramel food coloring the corporation sources, a byproduct of caramel processed with ammonium compounds, acids, or alkalis. Already removed from Pepsi products in California, where the state’s stricter stance on chemicals forced soda companies to reformulate or include a warning label, recent tests commission by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) found some Pepsi products sold outside of California still contain concerning levels of 4- MEI....

The Compassion Syndrome In Women Prevention

I had to wait a decade for the surprising answer, but now it comes from a new look at how women cope with stress. When the going gets rough, women respond with a “tend and befriend” response, says UCLA psychologist Shelley Taylor, PhD, author of The Tending Instinct. Tending, which is a hands-on style of nurturing, not only benefits others but also helps preserve the species in times of war and disaster—and helps women chill out....

The Health Benefits Of Thinking About Death Prevention

Skeptical? The research backs it up: In a 2011 study in the journal Self and Identity, researchers discovered that women were more likely to perform breast self-exams after being exposed to reminders of death. Similarly, notions of death were also shown to motivate people to exercise, use sunscreen, and even quit smoking (hence the push to include graphic pics on cigarette packs). And perhaps more surprisingly, thinking about death can also be a boost in the bedroom....
