“Basically, anything you buy that’s not 100% grass-fed is grass-fed, grain-finished,” says Shannon Hayes, a farmer and sustainable agriculture expert. Most calves actually start out on pasture but then get shipped to feedlots to fatten up on grain. “Within weeks, the nutritional perks of grass-fed beef are lost,” says Hayes.
