The FDA recently approved Mivarso, a topical gel that treats the redness caused by rosacea (available in September). “Patients with rosacea have over-reactive blood vessels in their skin, causing redness,” says Mark Jackson, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of Louisville, who researched Mirvaso for the phase 3 studies. “But up until this point, we’ve only been able to treat the inflammation and bumps, not the facial redness.” Mirvaso addresses this problem by reducing the blood flow through the over-reactive blood vessels, and decreasing overall redness as a result. Dr. Jackson isn’t the only one excited about the development. “This is a huge breakthrough in the treatment of rosacea,” says Marguerite Germain, MD, a practicing dermatologist in South Carolina, who isn’t affiliated with Mirvaso. “Before this drug, the only treatment for redness was laser treatments and makeup.” The ultimate seal of approval? “I have rosacea, and I can’t wait to try it myself,” says Dr. Germain.  If you have rosacea, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist this month to discuss a possible prescription, and learn more about rosacea here.
