Unfortunately, too many adult women are drinking to excess, setting themselves up for an increased risk of illnesses like breast cancer and heart disease. An estimated 1 in 8 women admit to “binge drinking” according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, often downing six drinks in a single sitting. Among women who drank too much, most were overindulging around three times a month. Now, a fascinating new experiment indicates just how significant genes might be: A group of 800 mice were fed a high-fat, high-sugar diet meant to mimic fast food—but they didn’t all respond the same way. Rather, some mice became 600% bigger in merely eight weeks, while others remained remarkably lean despite their junky eats.
